Description
* 49th Annual Novice Contest *
49 years ago the Novice Contest began to encourage the creation of new quartets. Nothing gets people motivated like a good old contest – and this is a contest that is no pressure and fun! Today’s Westminster Chorus is proud to continue that tradition and will be performing a live performance set after the contest.

The Novice Quartet Contest is a great opportunity for quartets to get their first experience in the Barbershop Harmony Society contest and judging system. All quartets are invited to come on February 6th, sing under standard contest rules to a warm and supportive audience, and learn from experienced judges what they are doing right and where they can improve.
There is uniqueness to The Novice Contest in that its scoring de-emphasizes previous contest experience by applying a handicap system. No more than two members of a quartet can have participated in Division or higher-level contests. Judges award scores strictly on the basis of performance, as in other contests, but a handicap reduction is applied subsequently for each quartet member who has previous contest experience. The reductions range from 5 points for having been in a previous Novice Contest to 50 points for being an International Champion. It adds to the fun and puts 1st timers on equal ground!
As O. C. Cash’s vision, we are still a society that encourages barbershop quartet singing in America. Please help us in this noble endeavor by advertising the Novice Contest to your chapter members at meetings, through your newsletter and email lists. We have included entry forms and flyers for you to distribute at meetings as well as to promote this event and solicit excitement for the opportunity your members have before them. Remind them that every championship quartet began as a novice. Why not start now!
We are confident that you will get as excited about this competition as we are. Keep in mind that only the 1st 24 quartets will be assigned a spot, with 4 alternates. Our chapter is very grateful for the support and encouragement we have received over the years. Let us know if you need extra flyers or entry forms. And remember, a good contest needs a good audience, so encourage attendance to cheer on the competitors!

Description
In the late 1970’s, the Civic and Cultural Center, as we know it today, was not in existence. Brea was still using the old City Hall on Brea Blvd. for its daily operations. Under the guidance of Mayor Wayne Wedin, the city undertook the colossal project of building the new civic center. Mayor Wedin, being a forward thinking politician, as well as being committed to enhancing Brea with the inclusion of the arts, sought community input on what services should be included in the new civic center.
